Dr. Harilaos Koumaras from NCSRD, 5GENESIS project coordinator participated in the online event “Xchanging Ideas – Global 5G Evolution” on 8th of December 2020, presenting the trial field results of 5G-enabled UAVs that performed in the framework of 5GDRONES Project on top of 5GENESIS Project experimental 5G infrastructure, where NCSR “DEMOKRITOS” participates. Dr Harilaos Koumaras, scientific responsible for Media Networks Laboratory’s H2020 project 5G!Drones, along with representatives from partners Cosmote, HEPTA, CAFA Tech, robots.expert, Municipality of Egaleo and INFOLYSiS conducted technical flight trials with drones in 5G network at the Stavros Mavrothalassitis municipal stadium of Egaleo, on 19-20 October 2020 and on Cosmote Academy premises,on 21 October 2020, in Athens, both locations being part of the 5GENESIS Athens platform..

On Wednesday 21st of October, 5G!Drones project finalized a set of trials at the 5GENESIS Athens platform at COSMOTE premises (Cosmote Academy) in Athens, Greece. The trials were executed using the Cosmote Edge server in the context of Use Case #4 (connectivity during crowded events). The main goal was to monitor the interoperability of drones and 5G under specific events. Many partners from 5GENESIS and 5G!Drones projects participated including NCSR “DEMOKRITOS”, COSMOTE and INFOLYSiS (from Greece), CAFA Tech (from Estonia), and robots.expert (from Finland). Feasibility tests were executed by 5G!Drones project at the Athens 5GENESIS platform (Municipal Stadium of Egaleo) for two consecutive days (19-20 Oct 2020). The trials main goal is to test the possibility of offering a better level of network services with drones under 5G and specifically to reduce dropped calls and degraded Internet connectivity during mass events. Many partners from 5GENESIS and 5G!Drones projects participated including NCSR “DEMOKRITOS”, COSMOTE, Municipality of Egaleo and INFOLYSiS (from Greece), Hepta Airborne and CAFA Tech (from Estonia), robots.expert (from Finland). Demo: OpenAirInterface 5G NSA system with COTS phone
In this demo Eurecom team showed the current implementation status of the OpenAirInterface (OAI) 5G non-standalone (NSA) system operating with a common-of-the-shelf (COTS) phone in the sub-6 GHz band. The radio access network (RAN) comprises an OAI eNB and a gNB, both running on general purpose x86 servers and USRP N310 software defined radios. Further, the team used the OAI evolved packet core (EPC) comprising home subscriber server (HSS), mobility management entity (MME), serving and packet data network gateway (S-PGW), which are all deployed in Docker containers. In the demo was shown the initial connection and user registration on the 4G cell, the secondary cell addition, the initial connection on the 5G cell and some initial traffic on the 5G cell.
